Thinking back

As I made fun of John tonight, I thought about this guy I know named Chris. Chris is a funny character and John thinks he's weird. I guess he is a little weird but not that much. I've known him for at least 10 years. Everytime we see Chris, he's wearing black jeans and a black t-shirt or black jeans with a powder blue shirt. It really does not matter the time of year, time of day or the event. Chris is sure to wear that same ensemble.
"
i met Chris when I worked at a credit union. He was hired as a teller fresh out of college. My girlfriend "D" sort of liked him and would invite him over on weekends to hang out. He use to wear his hair with this part down the center with the sides slicked down. D would mess it up to get rid of the part every chance she got. We would always laugh about him behind his back because of his poor fashion choices.

Chris and D dated off and on but could never make the relationship work. They have managed to remain friends all this time. His main problem was being cheap. He was and probably still is, very frugal. She use to complain about him always making her pay her portion of the bill whenever they went out no matter what. He made good money ( he eventually went on to work for Raymond James as a manager) and always lived with a roommate. For the longest time, he and his roommate refused to buy real furniture. They just used crates for tables and a futon for the sofa. I guess that's normal for bachelors. He drove this white Honda Civic for what seemed like forever (least 8 years). Little did we know, he was socking his money away with the hopes of retiring by the time he was 40. How I wish I could be so disciplined.

On Friday nights, D and I would hang out at her house and drink wine and surf the internet. We were always without dates. We would browse the online personals for hours and laugh at people we recognized. of course, our friend Chris kept an ad posted online. I can still see his online picture in my head right now. He had his black t-shirt and jeans on of course. He was kneeling down on one knee next to his dog with a grin on his face. His ads worked because Chris always had dates. He would introduce D and I to a different girl each month so that we can give him our opinion. For the most part, the girls he met online were all nice girls.

Eventually, D and I became envious of Chris and all of his dates so, we decided to post our own ads....

Chris is now married to this girl that neither one of us would have chosen for him but oh well. He seems very happy. He bought a $400K house in an exclusive community in South Tampa and is doing very well for himself.

We should all be so savvy. Do you think he paid cash for the house?

no. I doubt that he'll even retire at 40. His wife likes to spend his money. She quit her job right before the wedding because she could not handle the stress. Isn't it funny how people can change you.
